Goodmans Are Second Spirit of Union Recipients

The City of Union congratulates James and Marilyn Goodman of 101 Krug Drive as the second recipients of the Spirit of Union City Improvement Award. The Goodmans’ property was selected by the City Park Board for its beautiful landscaping and attention to detail.

The Goodmans moved into their new home in the Union Ridge subdivision in March 1997 from the Shiloh area of Harrison Township. They cited their new home’s open floorplan as a wonderful benefit of building. They also like the fact that all utilities are buried in the new subdivision, which visually expands both the landscaping and the sky beyond. “Living out here, you really get a grand sense of space,” Mrs. Goodman said of her neighborhood. “You see nice new homes and yards and not a power line to hinder the view!”

Mrs. Goodman also appreciates her new home’s larger lot, which has enabled her to expand her gardening efforts. This year alone, the Goodmans estimate they’ve planted over 20 flats of annuals. “Our grown children also appreciate our new home and new yard because now they know what to get me for Mother’s Day—more flowers!” Mrs. Goodman said.

Passersby driving along Sweet Potato Ridge Road may have noticed the Goodmans’ colorful property because the rear yard backs to Sweet Potato at Deubner Road, near the entrance to Union Ridge. The rear yard has its own amenities to admire: a glass-enclosed patio, plus a gardening shed that Mrs. Goodman hand-painted to depict a garden scene complete with a “mock” white picket fence, birdhouse, and flowers.

Check out the Goodmans’ property the next time you’re in the vicinity—you might get some ideas of your own! And who knows, you may be the next Spirit of Union recipient.
